About Canon Law...

We are collecting more articles and links on the general subject of Canon Law for inclusion in this page. In the meantime, the following links may be useful. We provide these links as a convenience to our web site visitors and do not necessarily endorse or agree with all materials contained on linked sites.

A slightly dated but otherwise excellent article on the history and development of the Church’s legal system from Apostolic times until the early twentieth century can be found here at NewAdvent.org.

The Church did not have a Code of Canon Law until 1917. Until recently, only the official Latin text was available. However, Dr. Edward N. Peters has produced an English translation.

A revised Code was promulgated in 1983 and is now in force. An English translation can be found at:

One prepares for a career in canon law by pursuing a course of postgraduate studies at a pontifical university with a canon law faculty. According to new norms issued by the Congregation for Christian Education, a two-year program (Cycle I) of preliminary studies in theology, Church history, Latin, Scripture and related subjects is required. This is followed by a three year program (Cycle II) leading to the Licentiate in Canon Law Degree (JCL). The final step (Cycle III) leading to the Doctor of Canon Law Degree (JCD) requires approximately one semester of course work plus a doctoral dissertation. The following are the web sites of some pontifical universities:

Catholic University of America (Washington, DC)

Saint Paul University
(Ottawa, Ontario)

The American Catholic College at Louvain (Belgium)

The Pontifical Gregorian University (Rome)

The Pontifical University of the Holy Cross (Rome)

The Pontifical Lateran University (Rome)
