One prepares
for a career in canon law by pursuing a course of postgraduate
studies at a pontifical university with a canon law faculty.
According to new norms issued by the Congregation for Christian
Education, a two-year program (Cycle I) of preliminary studies
in theology, Church history, Latin, Scripture and related
subjects is required. This is followed by a three year program
(Cycle II) leading to the Licentiate in Canon Law Degree (JCL).
The final step (Cycle III) leading to the Doctor of Canon Law
Degree (JCD) requires approximately one semester of course work
plus a doctoral dissertation. The following are the web sites of
some pontifical universities:
Catholic University of America (Washington, DC)
Saint
Paul University
(Ottawa, Ontario)
